(September 21, 1934 – January 30, 2014)
Suddenly in his condo in the Port of Newcastle, Ontario, with his loving wife, Diane Dron, by his side. Survived by daughter, Liane (Richard), and sons, Kevin (Laurie), Mike (Jennifer), Dan (Kim), and Jim (Leah). Papa to Eve; Grandpa John to William, Ellie and David; Ryan, Ani and Sofi; Kelsey and Scott; and Katie and Cassie. Best friend to Shawn Hagerman and friend of many others.
John was born in Saskatchewan and spent half his life in Toronto, before moving to his much loved “Shining Times Farm” in Haliburton, where he resided until this past June. He retired at 50 from Regal Greetings and Gift, where he worked as a Warehouse Manager. Retirement consisted of being a stay at home dad to daughter, Liane, and working the occasional construction job for various local cottagers. John enjoyed reading, gardening, fishing, making maple syrup, cooking, volunteering, playing sports, and travelling, especially to Myrtle Beach. Forestry conservation was a particular passion of John's and he planted hundreds of trees on his property in Haliburton and donated numerous plants to the Drag River Rehabilitation Project. He was a member of Stanhope Township’s Recreation Committee for many years and a member of St. Peter’s Church. He was considered by many of Liane’s teammates to be the team’s biggest fan, as he frequently attended practices and sports events. Many will miss him dearly as he leaves a gaping hole in so many hearts. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made to the SickKids Foundation or a tree be planted on your property in the spring.
You are invited to attend a celebration of John’s life on Sunday, February 9 at the Newcastle Funeral Home (386 Mill St. S., Newcastle - just north of 401 at first lights). Visitation will occur from 1-3pm, with a service to follow at 3pm.
